The 1kg Rule: How To Keep Getting Stronger Without Chasing Hero Numbers
Share
Everyone wants the big number. The 10kg jump. The lift that gets posted with three fire emojis. But chasing hero numbers is exactly how most people stall, burn out, or get hurt.
The rule
Never chase the same PB twice. Next time you go to hit a number you've already hit, don't aim to repeat it, and don't aim to smash it by 5 to 10kg either.
Just add 1kg.
That's it. Bar plus a 0.5kg plate each side. Write it down. That's a win.

Why it works
1kg feels small because it is small. That's the point. It's a jump your body can actually recover from and adapt to, session after session, instead of the boom and bust cycle of huge attempts followed by weeks of stalling. Small, consistent, unglamorous increases are what compound. Big, occasional jumps are what plateau.

Do this consistently across a training year and the numbers add up in a way chasing hero lifts never does, because you're not resetting to zero every time you miss a big jump. You're just stacking small, banked wins.
Let the programming do the thinking
