The Rule of Thirds: Why Most Sessions Won't Feel Great (And Why That's Fine)
Share
Here's something nobody tells you when you start training: you don't get three great sessions a week. You get one.
Log enough sessions and the pattern shows up every time. Roughly a third feel absolutely awful, a third feel completely unremarkable, and a third feel like you could lift the building. Most lifters treat that first third as a red flag. It isn't. It's the Rule of Thirds, and understanding it is what separates the people who train for years from the people who quit by March.
How it breaks down
The bad third
The bar feels bolted to the floor. You're tired, stressed, under slept, or all three. Your only job on this day is damage control: hit the minimum, protect your form, get the volume in, and get out. This is not the session to chase a max. Showing up counts double.
The okay third
Nothing special, nothing terrible. You do the work, hit your numbers, and go home. It's unglamorous and forgettable, and it's exactly where most of your actual strength gets built, because you showed up when there was no story to tell.
The good third
Everything clicks. Bar speed is fast, the weight feels light, and you PR without trying. Bank it. Just don't expect it every session, and don't panic when the pendulum swings back to average. It will, and that's fine.
What to do about it
Stop judging your progress session by session. Judge it in blocks of weeks.
Log every single session, good, bad and okay, and read the trend line, not the noise. The lifters who actually make gains aren't the ones who feel amazing every time they train. They're the ones who show up for the bad third anyway. That's the whole game.
Let the programming do the thinking
Every program we build, Starter, Minimum and Maximum Gains, runs on real periodisation, so you're never guessing what a bad third day should look like. The programming tells you when to push and when to just bank the volume, so one rough session never turns into a skipped week.
That's what the GAINS CLUB is built for: showing up together, thirds and all.
